Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to the Maka Connect mobile application, the websites www.maka.social and www.makaconnect.com, our in-person events, and all related services operated by Maka Social, Inc. (collectively, “Services”). Maka Connect is our singles events platform and primary product.

Our core business is producing in-person singles events. The Maka Connect app is the primary technology platform for those events. The websites serve primarily as a marketing hub and informational resource, though certain account and registration features may be available there as well.

By using our Services or registering for an event, you agree to the data practices described in this Privacy Policy. Your use of our Services is also subject to our Terms of Service.

Information We Collect

All information we collect serves the goal of facilitating safe, enjoyable in-person connections. Below is a description of what we collect and how it comes to us.

Information You Provide Directly

  • Account creation: Phone number, name, email address, date of birth, zip code, gender, sexual orientation, relationship status, and notification preferences.

  • Profile completion: Occupation, religious or spiritual beliefs (optional), political views (optional), favorite conversation topics, and responses to profile prompts.

  • Event registration: Ticket purchases are processed by our third-party merchant services provider, which handles all payment card data. We do not store credit card numbers or other sensitive financial information. We do record transaction history, including purchase amounts, dates, refunds, and promo codes applied, and we maintain platform wallet balances on your behalf.

  • Event check-in: A selfie photo captured at the time of check-in, which becomes your profile photo and is updated each time you attend an event.

  • Platform wallet: Platform credit balances resulting from event cancellations or promotional credits, held as non-transferable purchasing credit redeemable only within Maka Connect.

  • Communications: Messages, inquiries, and reports submitted to our support team.

Information Generated When You Use Our Services

  • Usage data:Features accessed, actions taken, session activity, and interactions with other users.

  • Device data:IP address, device type and identifiers, operating system, advertising identifiers, and crash data.

  • Location data:The Maka Connect app requires precise geolocation (latitude and longitude) for core event functionality, including check-in validation. Location may be collected in the background if you have granted that permission. Denying location access will prevent the app from functioning. The websites do not require precise location.

Information We Receive from Others

  • Other users:Reports or information submitted about you by other users.

  • Partners:Registration data or campaign performance information from partners through whom you create an account or through whom we advertise.

  • Event photography and videography:Maka Connect events are photographed and filmed by staff and contracted photographers. By registering for an event, you consent to photography and videography of yourself and agree that resulting images and footage may be used for social media, marketing, and promotional purposes without compensation. This consent is granted at registration and does not require a separate written agreement at the event. Our staff will make reasonable efforts to give you advance notice before photographing or recording you individually, but this is a courtesy and not a condition of use. If you wish to have an image or video in which you appear removed from future use, contact support@maka.social with a description or link. We will remove or obscure your likeness within 72 hours. Removal requests apply to future use under our control and do not constitute a legal demand to recall previously distributed content.

  • Safety data:Where permitted by law, we may receive information about individuals with a history of harmful conduct from third parties to protect our users.

How We Use Your Information

To Provide and Improve Our Services

  • Create and manage your account

  • Personalize your experience, including displaying nearby events and relevant user profiles

  • Process ticket purchases and apply platform wallet credits at checkout

  • Power in-event features including speed dating rotations, trivia team assignments, and Dinner Party seating

  • Administer contests, promotions, and special offers

To Facilitate Connections Between Users

  • Display your profile to other attendees based on proximity and event participation

  • Enable the Community feature for users who have attended at least one event and opted in, allowing them to browse nearby member profiles and send event invitations

  • Facilitate mutual matches and phone number exchange between consenting users

To Generate Event Pairings Using Automated Matching

For Dinner Party events, we use an automated algorithm to assign seating based on profile attributes including conversation topics, occupation, and any optional personal information you have provided. This matching is optimized for conversational compatibility, not romantic compatibility. You may review the attributes used in your profile at any time.

To Manage Event Gender Balance

We use gender data to monitor ticket sales ratios for applicable event types. When a gender imbalance threshold is reached, we may send targeted promotional offers to users of the underrepresented gender within a relevant geographic radius. You may opt out of promotional messaging in your notification preferences.

To Enforce Platform Rules

  • Monitor for violations of our Terms of Service

  • Enforce blocks between users, including preventing mutually blocked users from attending the same events

  • Detect patterns of cancellation abuse, which may result in automatic account suspension

  • Issue account suspensions (time-limited) or bans (permanent until reversed by an administrator) for violations of our Terms of Service or conduct policies

For Advertising and Marketing

  • Use real event photos and footage in social media posts and advertising campaigns

  • Measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns on and off our Services

  • Send promotional communications about upcoming events to users who have opted in

For Legal Compliance and Safety

  • Respond to legal process and lawful requests from law enforcement or regulatory authorities

  • Protect the rights, safety, and property of Maka Social, our users, and the public

  • Enforce our Terms of Service and defend against legal claims

How We Share Your Information

With other users: Your profile is visible to other attendees at events you attend. If you opt into the Community feature, your profile may also be visible to nearby members who have likewise opted in. Phone numbers are shared only when both users mutually match. Email addresses are never shared with other users.

With service providers: We share data with vetted vendors who support our operations, including payment processing, hosting, analytics, customer support, and advertising. All vendors are bound by data protection agreements.

With advertising partners: We may share limited data in hashed, non-human-readable form for the purpose of delivering and measuring targeted advertising.

In corporate transactions: If Maka Social is involved in a merger, acquisition, or similar transaction, your information may be transferred. Successors are bound by this policy until it is legally superseded.

With law enforcement: We cooperate fully and voluntarily with law enforcement in matters involving physical harm, property damage, or theft. For other matters, we prioritize user privacy and disclose only as required by law.

To enforce legal rights: We may share information to protect our legal rights or those of our users, enforce our Terms of Service, or defend against legal claims.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies (including web beacons, pixels, and SDKs) to recognize you and your devices across our websites and app. We do not currently respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals, as no uniform standard exists.

Your Rights and Choices

  • Access and correction:You may review and update your profile information at any time through the app or by contacting support@maka.social.

  • Device permissions:You may adjust location, camera, contacts, and notification permissions through your device settings. Disabling required permissions will limit app functionality.

  • Promotional communications:You may update your notification preferences in your account settings to limit or stop promotional communications.

  • Data requests:Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data. Submit requests to support@maka.social. We may require identity verification before processing a request.

  • Account closure:You may close your account through the app. Closed accounts are retained for 90 days for safety purposes before deletion.

We may reject requests if we are unable to verify your identity, if the request is unlawful, or if fulfilling it would prevent us from providing our Services. For example, we cannot operate the app without your date of birth, which we use to confirm you are 18 or older.

Data Retention

We retain personal data as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our Services. After account closure:

  • A 90-day safety retention window applies before personal data is deleted, to allow investigation of any outstanding conduct issues.

  • Transaction records are retained to meet applicable tax and accounting obligations.

  • Consent records are retained for five years to document our compliance with applicable law.

  • Data supporting active or potential legal claims is retained for the duration of those proceedings.

  • Records sufficient to prevent banned users from re-registering are retained indefinitely.

Children’s Privacy

Our Services are intended solely for individuals 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a user may be underage, please report them through the in-app reporting feature.

Job Candidates, Contractors, and Vendors

We process personal information from job applicants, contractors, and vendor representatives as part of our normal business operations. This information is used solely for recruitment, contracting, or vendor management purposes and is retained only as long as necessary for those purposes. We do not share this information beyond our internal team and any service providers directly supporting those processes.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of material changes before they take effect so you have time to review them. Continued use of our Services following notice of changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
